Raphael Wallfisch
St Mary’s, Thame
Saturday 15 October at 7.30pm
International cellist Raphael Wallfisch will be joining the orchestra conducted by John Lubbock on Saturday 15th October at St. Mary’s Church, Thame at 7.30 p.m.
The concert opens with one of Schumann’s best known pieces Träumerei, Dreaming, written for solo piano but arranged here for string orchestra. Raphael Wallfisch then plays Schumann’s Cello Concerto in the version for cello and string orchestra. Although this work was completed some years before Schumann’s death it was never played in his lifetime. After the interval Raphael completes his solos with the well known Andante Cantabile, the second movement of Tchaikovsky’s first string quartet, said to be based on a folk-song the composer heard whistled by a house painter, or according to other reports, a carpenter. The orchestra takes centre stage for the finale – Dvořák’s lyrical Serenade for Strings full of the folk melodies of Bohemia, written in a fruitful year for Dvořák as he was becoming an established composer.
